Hey...today is April Fools Day.  That's an "oo" word!
A little google search drummed up a possible reason for the naming of this day in such a manner.

Some historians speculate that April Fools' Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563.  People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through to April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes.  Hmmmm....

Our junior division has reached the lobby.

We are now filling buckets.

With students who have contributed to the cause.

They are having fun.

While helping out at the same time!

A young artist.

With her great work of art.

Speaking of works of art.

We wrote about our families.

We mentioned how much we love them.

And how much they love us.

We thanked our moms.

We thanked our dads.

We talked about appreciation.

And how much our family means to us.

Our families are so special.

And...we are special too!

We enjoyed colouring our pages.

So that they would stand out.

Colourful work.

Like a rainbow.

We appreciate our siblings.

And we know they appreciate us.

A happy family member.

Because he feels so loved.

As do we all.

Because we are all created by God.

Deep colours.

For a deep person.

Our families are caring.

Our families are loving.

A member of our classroom family.

And her cool sushi shirt!
Have a great evening everyone!

Day 128 - Tuesday, April 2

What another great day at school.

The grade two children from our class and Mrs. Akkawi's class gathered in the leraning commons for the entire morning.

They learned more about simple machines and how they help make work easier.

Scientist Irene was our visiting scientist.

Here she demonstrates the fulcrum on which a lever balances.

A couple of students were guinea pigs for this experiment.

We learned that the placement of the fulcrum plays an important role in how the lever can be used to make work easier.

Scientist Irene is at the "inclined plane" centre.

The children listened carefully and responded with great estimates and answers.

Our "lever centre" was a hit as well.

Scientist Nancy shows the way.

The "screw centre" was one where the students had to wear protective eyewear.

Scientist Effy was in control here.

Scientist Heidi runs the show at the "wheel and axle" centre.

Where the children were able to make their own car.

Yup, that receives a "two thumbs up" from a happy student.

Scientist Kiera teaches the children at the "wedge centre".

They're going to town here.

Making some great shapes.

A great deal of concentration.

Marbles were used to provide an effort at the "lever centre".

Too much fun!

Aha, the marbles will have work to do to lift the teddy bear!

Looking good.

Cars at the inclined plane centre.  We'll have to check out what they do in tomorrow's blog entry.

A lovely spring bulletin board outside "The Zone".

There are just two more days to go in our Lenten Fundraiser.

We are almost there with our classroom goal of raising $100.00.  Just a little bit more to go.
Indeed, the children are making a difference in the lives of others in a faraway land.
Have a great evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 129 - Wednesday, April 3

Our choir met yesterday.

We rehearse in the same learning commons where our Scientist set-up took place.

Next week we are performing at the Chateau Laurier downtown for a special event of Superintendents of School Boards from all across the province of Ontario.

Today was Day Seven of our OK Clean Water project.

As you can see, the pipelines continue to be filled.

As the children continue to donate.

Buckets are filling to the brim as well.

Happy children.

They know they are making a difference.

It is so good to see.

Very special!

Our class is almost at its goal of $100.00.

We are sixteen dollars and sixty cents short...hopefully tomorrow!

The children at play.

We had Mrs. Akkawi's grade two's in our class for the afternoon.

Mr. Hamer first read them a few fables at carpet...then they were allowed to play.

Happy campers!

That's Lina in the background, a co-op student from St. FX High School.
She helps out in the other class.

Creative kids.

Doing creative things.

Which bring smiles and contentment.

A lovely garden.

A proud gardener.

Yes she is.

Don't they look so comfortable?  Big smile.

It's hands up yesterday for Scientist Irene.

Some more pics from the workshop.

He's working hard to lift her!  Check out where the fulcrum is located!

The wheel and axle centre.

The lever centre.

Our wonderful learning commons.

Safety glasses.

Protect this handsome lad's face.

And this handsome lad's face as well.

Fum at the wheel and axle centre.

Fun at the screw centre.

Looks cool.

Lots of interest at the inclined plane centre.

Cool cars.

A round table discussion at the wedge centre.

Great listeners.

Check this out.

Each of the three axles is of a different size.

Which means the strings will pull up at different rates.

Detailed drawing.

Great parent volunteers at all centres.

Happiness!

Another big wave for the camera.

The lever and the fulcrum.

Placing the marbles to raise the teddy bear.

Indeed, science is too much fun!
Check in tomorrow for more pics from this great workshop!

Day 130 - Thursday, April 4

On Thursday we were still placing "water droplets" on our pipelines.

The junior division reached the lobby first.

Where they began filling buckets.  It seems our primary children are there now as well.

Our grade five class created some of their own buckets as well.

The youngsters are enjoying filling them too!

Pretty colourful.

When I look at this wonderful display, I think of my daughter who just landed in Rwanda with the Governor General aboard Air Force Three.  They are there to honour the people of this nation who experienced the terrifying genocide 25 years ago this week.

Mr. "A" is a guinea pig for an experiment with pulleys in the grade four class.

Looks like fun.

So-o-o...how about revisiting our "Scientist in the Schools" workshop from earlier in the week.

These children are at the inclined plane centre.

Three inclined planes are set up at three different angles.

The children must first estimate how many marbles must be placed in the bucket to allow the sports car to overcome inertia and begin the car rolling.

This young girl is still trying to determine her estimate.  That's Madame, our new French teacher to the right.

She's made her estimate.

Now it's time to check to see if it is a valid estimate.

We learned that scientist would make hundreds of estimates in a single experiment to help attain the greatest accuracy.

Safety glasses are a must at the screw centre as we are using some tools here.

Two carpenters hard at work.

Ditto that!

He's all smiles.

The wedge centre offered a variety of activities as well.

Mom and daughter.

Mom and two daughters!  Have a great evening everyone.
Tune in later to see Friday's events.  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 131 - Friday, April 5

The first Friday in April found us conducting a memory lesson.
The children were given this picture and asked to look at it for three minutes.

Then they had to put the picture away in their desks.

And they were given a blank piece of paper.

Where they were given another three minutes to write down or draw as many of the items they recalled from the picture.

Was it an easy task?

It proved to be challenging, but fun.  Afterwards, the girls and boys were able to compare their answers with the picture.

A happy girl.

With two happy friends.

She loves her dad.

He loves Fridays.

Wow!  We located an old activity we hadn't had time to complete a few months earlier on "The First Snow".

The children write in their "rough copy" book by double spacing.
When they conference with Mr. Hamer, the blue pen highlights the necessary changes.

Multiplication...

...and division...

...seems easy for our group.

We draw out the example...

...which really helps!

Let's check back to our scientist day.

The wedge centre.

Where we attempt to put different shaped objects in sand.

Of course...wedges work better than objects with blunt ends.

Our lever centre.

The boys are going fishing.

Check out their poles...there is coloured tape.

The tape indicates different regions along the pole where you may place the fulcrum of the lever.  Very interesting!

The wheel and axle centre.  Our French teacher checks in on the action.

The screw centre.

Aha!  A fun experiment in crushing cans!

He's donned his protective glasses.

As have the girls.

They made their own version of the screw.
We will showcase more pics from this day next week!

Say, our "Eight Days to Kumbo" OK Clean Water fundraiser brought in over three thousand dollars!  The teachers still have a lenten lunch where they will be able to contribute some more funds as well as some of the Friday staff dress-down money coming the way of the fundraiser.  What a giving school St. Bernard is!
Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!  Mr. Hamer OCT
