Week Eight of School

Day 32 - Monday, Oct.22

Last week, Danny Pece from Ontario Hydro came from his home in Oakville, Ontario to deliver a workshop on Hydro safety in affiliation with Hydro Ottawa.

Spelling List for Week Eight (long e words)

 1.  bee         6.  feed
2.  seem      7.  feet
   3.  need       8.  week
4.  keep       9.  feel
   5.  deep      10. deed

Danny's display of material truly enhanced the presentation.

He gave a clinic to the kindergarten classes during Block One, the Primary grades in Block Two and the juniors after lunch in the third block.

Danny also utilized the huge screen to enhance the demonstrations.

Yes, it's true.  You may just win a tablet if you take part in the "whiz quiz" on line.

Danny was quick with his questions and he was very impressed with the responses from the children.

This little experiment demonstrated the electricity in the line.

Danny showed us his safety equipment.

How to hold a plug properly.

Never use a knife or a fork to get toast from the toaster.  You may not get a shock right away, but you could damage the coil inside the toaster that may just result in a shock the next time you use the device.

This is a piece of equipment that allows the hydro workers to locate underground lines.

Aha!  The good old cucumber test.

Look at the electricity flowing through that cucumber.

The screen above also showcases what is going on at table level.
By the way, the cucumber is a perfect "stand in" for a human body as our bodies are made up of 66% water!

What you read on the SmartBoard are the contributions from our students during a brainstorming session.

We ran out of space on the SmartBoard and we wanted to keep everything on one page, so Mr. Hamer added further student contributions on the chalk board.

Then we watched an entertaining video on safety with electricity.

It certainly taught us a lot.

Especially when Mr. Duck wasn't so careful.

Well, you know what happens.

The children took these lessons very seriously.

Here is the cover of our next class book.

The students selected four or five of our brainstormed statements to add to their writing about what they learned.

Each child completed a page.

They were asked to fill all of the lines.

While we brainstormed ten things we learned, each child's page for the class book will be a little different from their peers.

It's good for moms and dads to review electrical safety as well.

Nice colouring.

Interesting choices.

The children learned that they must stay clear of any electrical power lines.

They also learned that anyone who works with electricity must wear specially designed protective clothing.

Today we reviewed some of our blog entries on the SmartBoard.

Wouldn't you know it...this young lady was wearing the same shirt today that she was photographed in back in the early weeks of school!

Here is our homework for the week.  Students, along with guidance from parents, are asked to complete each of the sentence starters.  You may even add a second sentence for each one if you feel you have enough space.  Don't forget to colour the image at the top carefully with wax crayons or pencil crayons.  Feel free to use markers to make a colourful border along the checkerboard frame as well as the smaller checkerboard lines in the top section.

Here is a sample from my class blog last year.
Have a great evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer, OCT

Day 33 - Tuesday, Oct.23

Today we passed back some of the work to the children.

They were asked to once again select a favourite page from their binder.

For some it was math.

For others...printing.

Perhaps it was their colouring...

...that they liked.

Or, perhaps...combining art...

,,,with math.

For some, it was their homework.

That they were proud of.

Nice math work.

Nice colouring!

This activity seemed to be a popular one.

And...rightly so.

Smiles...

...for a good effort.

He's a fine printer.

Better than me even!

Learning place value.

Up into the hundreds.

Maybe it's the cheetah...

...that he likes.

Or...maybe...

...a slightly tamer cat.

How about a unicorn...

...to go along with two-digit addition.

She holds her work in "high" esteem.

Nicely done.

A true scientist...

...cares for the environment.

Another unicorn page.

Nice math and coloring.

Solving math word problems...

...earned this young lady a big sticker.

How about some social studies.

Where we learned about Canada.

We share more of our class book pages...

...from our safety lessons.

The children took great care in their work.

Following the brainstorming session, each child selected the points they wished to include.

Some points are similar...

...while others are different.

The lightning bolt jumps out at you.

As do the large, colourful letters.

These pages were taken down from the "Creation" wall and published into another class book.  Have a fine evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 34 - Wednesday, Oct.24

We have been learning how to tell time to the hour and half hour.
Well, the students caught on real quickly so today we decided to try telling time to the quarter hour.  As this lovely little girl shows us, it's 9:15 AM, the time the morning school bell rings to begin classes for the day.

An hour and fifteen minutes later, at 10:30 AM, it's recess time!

Block two of our morning begins at 10:45 AM...or...a quarter to eleven.

We're all starving because it is twelve noon...lunchtime!

After an hour break from studies we enter the school at 1:00 PM, time to begin our afternoon classes.

Yabba dabba doo!  It's afternoon recess time at 2:15 PM.

Our final block of the day begins at 2:30 PM.

75 minutes later and it's time to head home from school at 3:45 or a quarter to four.

Suppertime!

Or...perhaps a later supper time?

Time to watch my last TV show before bedtime.

I'm tucked into bed.

I think I'm snoring.

Fast asleep.

Midnight!

Two in the morning...yikes!

Two-thirty in the morning and I'm dreaming about the fun I have in school.

Mr. Hamer enjoys choir.

The choir enjoys gathering each week.

We prepare for a variety of concerts.

We will be singing this Chris De Burgh song at our Remembrance Day ceremony.

Mme Latou enjoys helping out at choir.

On Tuesday we gathered in Mrs. Akkawi's class.

Mr. Hamer taught us some new songs.

With actions too.

Today we combined our two classes for a larger gym activity.

Students lead the warm-ups.

Mrs. Akkawi helps out while Mr. Hamer sets the gym up for our big soccer game.

Looks like some great stretches are taking place.

Push-ups too.

It was the students who decided that activity.

Time for some game action.

We take shifts for everyone.

Lots of calories are being burned.

The boys and girls love playing together.

Goalie ball!

Go get it!

Too much fun.

She's a good goalie.

Time to say good-bye for this evening as Mr. Hamer has to head out to a band practice.
Have a great evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 35 - Thursday, Oct.25

This week we read a lovely book about the environment.

Lulie was an iceberg that calved off a glacier near Greenland.

The illustrations in the book are fabulous...note the arctic tern hidden in the glacier.

Ah...that's better.  This is Kiki who will fly the entire distance from the far north to the deep south.

Lulie the iceberg begins his journey and is about to discover so much about our world.

He has many mates who assist him on the way.
Yes, literature for children is so enjoyable to read.

Speaking of reading, this morning we headed over to the learning commons where we met our morning buddy class of Grade Five students.

We gathered in the pit.

Mr. Hamer taught the children a blues song about going to our school...St. Bernard.

Of course, it was an upbeat blues tune!

Mr. Papineau enjoyed listening in on the tune.

Then we broke off into reading buddies.

The groups could sit anywhere in the commons.

Lots of cool seating options.

Lots of fun books too.

Great mentorship.

With more Grade Five pupils, some students are awarded two buddies.

Some like to hang together with their own age group.

In a common bond of a passion for reading.

Smiles.

Teamwork.

The Fab Four!

Contented children.

"Look what I'm reading, Mr. Hamer!"

"I can read upside-down!"

Keen listening.

A grade two student reading to a grade five one.

Total engagement.

 A non-fiction book on animals.

A terrific trio.

Wise owl enjoys being read to.

"Look at that cool picture!"

Some play time...

...finds us with colourful bracelets.

Too cool.

Yup...it's that time of year!

We're having a blast.

Sharing a spinning chair.

Nice!

Two friends with two friends.

In the afternoon we worked on a Halloween acrostic poem.

With brainstormed ideas for each letter in the word Halloween.

Speaking of reading, here I am with our former Governor General last year at a launch of his book "Ingenius".  That's my daughter, Alison, in the middle and my wife, Lisa, to the right in behind David Johnston's co-author.  As soon as this photo was snapped, Alison and David Johnston were whisked off to the airport where they both traveled on the GG's Challenger jet out west.  Alison has worked for the Governor General at Rideau Hall for the past few years.  Of course, we now have a new GG.

Tonight, we met once again at David Johnston's latest book signing.  His latest book entitled "Trust" has just been published.  I am looking forward to reading it in the next little while.
Time to re-ignite this week's blog posting.  Have a great evening everyone!

Day 36 - Friday, Oct.26

On Friday, we visited a kindergarten class.

Mr. Best was thrilled to have us come by to sing.

We were just as excited to pay a visit to our young friends!

Some of our classmates have siblings and other relatives in the class.

Lots of eager pupils!

Keen singers too.

I'd like to thank Ms. Tania for snapping these images for our blog.

As usual, I have a couple of assistants who help with the singing.

Many of the songs we sing have actions involved and it's good to have a couple of students up front to lead the actions for the youngsters.

Too much fun.

A cousin.

More relatives.

Even more still!

Brotherly love!

Back in class we worked on "Autumn Math."

Some keen workers.

Combining math and art.

Cool kid!

Cool shirt!

Let's go in reverse order...cool shirt!

Cool kid!

Yes, they love having their pictures taken.

And...they love when we look at the blog once a week in class!

Saturnalia!

Well...it's close to that time of the year!

Total concentration.

"I'm almost done, Mr. Hamer!"

Looking good to me!

Smiley faces.

Smiles...times two!

She loves the colour orange!

Taking his time to conduct quality work.

With a buddy.

Indeed...normal is boring...think outside the box!

Just like this little girl does every day...and her classmates too!
Have a great weekend everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT
