Day 160 - Wednesday, May 22

Mr. Hamer made a gift for each student.

He created a cover for our year-end "Memory Book!".

All of the class books the students made will be compiled into a single anthology.

It will be about 70 pages long.

Mr. Hamer enjoyed colouring each cover for each student in the class over the long weekend that just passed.

The students got the opportunity to pick the colour they wanted.  Parents will see these books at the end of the school year when the students bring them home.

This week we learned about animal tracks.

Like the lady in the cartoon, we became detectives.

Animal tracks can tell us so many things about the animal that made the track.

We can identify the animal by the track.

We can tell which direction in which the animal was traveling.

We can figure out if the animal was walking slowly or running.

Lots to learn.

Are you an animal detective?

Looks like  claws are out on this track.

Mammals made these ones.

Dogs show their claws when they walk or run.

Cats do not show their claws.

A little girl with some cool slime.

In math class we discussed fractions and probability...two related items.
What fraction of these students are boys?  If you guessed two-fifths then you are correct.

Because it is EQAO this week...

...some of Mrs. Akkawi's pupils come over to our class for the morning.

Here are some of ours.

Lots of smiles.

Lots of learning.

We welcome Mrs. Akkawi's Grade Two students seeing as their Grade Three classmates are doing the EQAO testing.

A happy face.

Working under the desk!

Learning how to classify objects into groups or categories.

A new set-up for the kindergarten class on the playground.

Bowls will be inserted into the holes in the bench to make an outdoor play kitchen.

Time for some outdoor fun!

He spins the skipping rope and the girls jump when it passes their way.

Good chums.

Friends from both classes.

Our new outdoor kitchen getting set up.
Have a great evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 161 - Thursday, May 23

Today we started some science research...

...on animals.

As a whole class we created a research project on elephants at the Smart board..

We went to the National Geographic Kids website and selected a study on elephants.

We jotted down five important facts on elephants.  Then we performed a Google search on elephant images and selected five images we thought would support the caption we created.  Later in the day, the children were afforded the opportunity to check out the website and see if they could find an animal to choose for their own research.  The in-school project will continue over the next few day of school heading into next week.

This week we practised the "Better Answers" strategy as a whole class.  This strategy has the students produce a "deeper" response to a comprehension question.  The underlined red area is where the student is encouraged to "rephrase" the question as the opening to their response.  The shorter green area is where they indicate the "gyst" or "main idea" to the response.  The blue area is where they select facts to back up the answer.  Finally, the purple section is where they "wrap up" their answer.

We then went and brainstormed as a class an answer to a question from a story we had read.  The students then copied down the full response on their sheet.

Remember, you can click on the image to blow it up in order to see the written response.

A colourful sheet!

Looking good.

A proud responder.

Nice border.

I snapped these images while the students were in the process of colouring their sheet.

They are all doing a "bang up" job!

Love these colour tones.

Beautiful!

Another proud partner.

Perfect!

Big smiles for big answers.

Love it!

In math class we are studying probability.
Mr. Hamer got out this plastic bowl and a number of coloured teddy bears.

For this experiment, Mr. Hamer had only one red and one yellow bear in the bowl.

A volunteer goes around the class.

Time to pick your bear.

Some pick yellow.

Some pick red.

Some like to guess their colour beforehand.

There's excitement in the air!

They can't wait...

...to see what they pull out.

Going around the entire class takes time.

Yet everyone stays focussed.

They eagerly await their turn.

They observe each other.

They don't even sneak a peek!

Great going!

Our tally lady must get a turn.

Ditto for our volunteer.

The results are close...11 red, eight yellow...almost 50-50 as would be expected.

Next we went with two green and one yellow.

Too much fun.

In the end, Mr. Hamer added another green and indicated that each child who pulled the red teddy bear from the bowl would be given a jelly bean or two rockets.

These were the results.  Mr. Hamer's treat container never saw a student!
Yes, school sure can be tons of fun!  Have a great evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 162 - Friday, May 24

A mom sent me some images from our "Breakfast on the Shore" celebration.

And from our First Holy Communion mass.  Thanks to that mom!

Looks like some of our class books are up for sale.

Creative spelling.

Our high school co-op student, Ms. Lela and Mrs. Akkawi!

Today we worked on our "autograph" page for our year-end memory book.  Each child printed their name in a colour of their choice.  When Mr. Hamer said, "Rotate" the students passed the sheet along to the next student.  After 18 rotations everyone had a completely signed autograph page!

Some more looks...

...at our animal tracks lesson.

Shape and size...

...help us to identify the animal that made the track.

It's fun playing detective.

We also learned about hooves.

We are true science detectives.

Animals around the world...

...share their footprints in sand, mud, soil and snow.
Check out these footprints!
Have a great weekend!  Mr. Hamer OCT
