We read the story of Creation.
Remember...you can enlarge the image by clicking on it.
You can return to the default look of the page by clicking outside the image.

From the book of Genesis.

The children learned that Day One, Day Two, etc were actually longer periods of time than our days.

We then began colouring a cool worksheet.

For homework this week, the children are asked to memorize as many stanzas of the Creation Poem as they can.

This is our Spelling Test book.  Throughout the year, the children will do their weekly spelling test on Mondays.  They will also be given their new list Mondays.  The boys and girls are asked to have the spelling book signed by a parent or guardian each Monday night and returned to school Tuesday morning.  They are also asked to rewrite any words they had misspelled in the test.  Thanks!

We are learning about air in class right now.  It is hurricane season to the south of us.

Today we learned about hurricanes.  We also learned that there is one hurricane growing stronger in the Atlantic right now.  We will follow the progress of Hurricane Florence in the coming days. It has now intensified into a Category 4 Hurricane!

We learned about the plans that should be made by people who live in the southern areas affected.

Mr. Hamer loves the sayings on the shirts the children wear to school.  Good for dad!  Hehehe!

This young lad is pretty sure of himself and I am proud of him!

Say, Mr. Hamer printed off a 55% coupon and was able to purchase this package of 50 markers at Michaels for the price of a single hamburger.

I explained to the children that I paid a little less than half price for the markers.  I also mentioned that a hamburger could be eaten in just a few minutes and I could get months and months of enjoyment from the markers!  That's Math for everyday living in my books!  Big grin!

Today we learned the strategies involved in solving crossword puzzles.
One trick is to count the boxes so that you know the number of letters in the word.
Another strategy is to read the sentence clues that come with most crosswords.

We also learned that as we solve the puzzle we are given further clues because some letters are shared between the words.  Too much fun!

We even have a few animal helpers in the class...like Bernie, the St. Bernard from St. Bernard Catholic School.

This little friend is proud of her Religion work.

He's working very diligently on his spelling.

These young lasses have completed their assignment and are given the opportunity to select an activity of their choosing.

"I'm proud of my effort!" he says...and we are proud of him.

Working side-by-side collaboratively is a learned skill and these two are pros already!

As are these eager pupils.

This tandem as well.

"Do you like my work?"  Yes we do!

A finished assignment.

We'll finish this evening's post off with the saying on this little girl's shirt...Oh Buoy!  Sea Ya Later!  Whatever Floats Your Boat!  Chillin!
Have a great evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day Six - Tuesday, Sept. 11

On Tuesdays, Mr. Hamer runs choir for the junior grades in the Learning Commons over lunchtime.

He brings his guitar with him.

Mrs. Blackmore (seated with the children) directs the choir.

We will be singing the national anthem at an Ottawa 67's game in late November.
We will also sing at mass next week.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Hamer reviewed the calendar with the children.
Lots of hands go up when I pose a question to the group!

Some of the children at carpet.

In Block Three on Tuesdays we go across the hallway to Mrs. Akkawi's class.

While there, we sing songs.

We may read stories at other times.

Or we may do a Religion lesson.

Here is the song we learned this week.

Both classes grouped together.

The other class is a grade 2/3 combined group.

Last year, Mr. Hamer taught a combined 1/2 classroom of children.

As always, lots of eager hands go up to respond to lessons or to add a comment to what we are discussing.

There's Mrs. Akkawi!

There's Mr. Hamer with Mr. Guitar!

Here are a few of the students holding their poster they completed.
Remember, you can click on the image to see it in larger format to make it easier to read the fine print!  Hehehe!

Each poster asks a bit of information from the pupil.

It is fun to learn about their fave food.

It is equally fun to see which goals they set for the year.

Maybe at the end of Grade Two, they can revisit their goals to see if they have accomplished them!

That would be fun!

It's nice to have such mature pupils in class.

Filled with creativity...

...and curiosity!
Have a lovely evening everyone!

Day Seven - Wednesday, Sept. 12

Day Seven into the school year fell on a Wednesday.
This young lad is dressed in style!  Yes, sometimes the heat in Ottawa feels like it does in the southern islands!

We find the students working in their island groupings.

The children don't always stay in the groups.

We have other areas of the class where they can choose to work.

They can even work with a friend from another group if they promise to devote their attention to the activity.

Crayons, pencil crayons and pencils are provided in their little red containers.

The fan on the floor sure comes in handy on the hotter days.

The pink book under the young lad's work offers a softer surface than the desk when colouring images which appear on their work.

The children know that each classmate is part of their St. Bernard Grade Two family.

We treat each other with dignity and respect.

We learn that acceptance of each and every one of our classmates is so important.

Each day, a child acts as teacher to run the carpet activities.

Here we are in the outdoor classroom.

Having fun posing for pictures.

And...for a goofy one!

Time to share a few more posters.

The poster lists their fave food items.

Yum yum!

It's also time for sharing the goals we set.

The children are learning that setting goals is important in life.

It gives you a solid agenda and purpose for your work.

We are happy to work toward our goals each day in class.

No, these girls are not getting paid to babysit our little animals.  It's just fun hanging out with them!  Tomorrow I will catch you up with Thursday's activities and over the weekend we will finish up with some pics and stories from Friday of this week!
Have a relaxing evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day Eight - Thursday, Sept. 13

It's always fun showcasing our class work.

Here's the narrative we brainstormed about our first day of school.

Our homework from the first week of school where we wrote about our summer vacation.

Our butterfly art.

Where we learned about the miracle of nature where a caterpillar changes into a butterfly.

Our school prayer.

The students enjoyed working in groups.

To solve some addition problems.

The use of manipulatives helped out.

It's all smiles.

Then back to work!

Math sure is fun.

These girls agree.

"I can count with my fingers!"

Dedication to their work.

"Hi" to our families!

A nice class.

Cheerful pupils.

Focused on the task at hand.

Math is colourful too.

At least we think so.

Let's count a different way!

Check and double-check.

Even Batman does math!

Our class hard at work.

Day Nine - Friday, Sept. 14

Friday of this week was a colourful day.

The class made their hot air balloons.

Which symbolize our "taking off" into a new school year of learning.

The process was fun.  First we coloured our balloon sheets.

Then we cut them out and stapled them onto a black piece of construction paper.

We were careful not to hurt ourselves.

Then we rolled up some toilet paper into little scrunchy amounts.

And stuck them into the balloon.

We stapled it all together.

A basket with our name on it was added.

With some glue and some tape for good measure.

The hot air balloon now adorns our classroom wall!

Aren't we a colourful bunch?

Yes we are!

We love our balloon patterns.

We love our colour choices.

It's fun doing art.

We will show you our classroom wall with all of the hot air balloons taking off next week!

Let's have some playground fun!  Four Square is a popular ball game with the children.

We've got all the moves.

Made in the shade.

Yes, a posed pic!

All smiles.

Friendship.

Caring.

Getting along.

Good old playing in the dirt!

Have a great weekend.
Remember to study your spelling words and your Creation Poem!
All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT
