Already flying high in our learning.

Working in groups collaboratively.

Producing excellent quality work.

Doing our best each and every day.

God is with us along the journey.

We are all looking forward to a fabulous school year.

Our butterflies are also taking off.

As we learn about science.

Religion.

Math.

Language.

French.

Phys. Ed. and so much more!

We have learned to line-up in safety before entering the portapack.

Looks good to me!

Yes, with the humidex averaging above 30 degrees throughout September, we do need a bit of refreshment out in the portapack.

We pretended we were on a ride at the fair.

The students danced around the classroom.

Every time they passed by Mr. Hamer, they walked through a mist of water.

It worked to cool these young people down!

Each pupil was asked today to share their favourite piece of work from their binder.

This lad enjoyed completing a crossword in math class.

He likes his Religion sheet.

When we learned about Creation.

This young lass enjoys Social Studies.

Where she learned quite a bit about her hometown...Ottawa!

He likes math.

He also likes trains.

How about word families.

Nicely done!

We love our country.

We will learn a lot about Canada throughout the school year.

She is proud of her first spelling list.

Completed perfectly!

He's proud of his printing.

Letter Aa fun!

Ditto for this young lass.

Looking good!

Her too!

An "A+" for her A's, I say!

Math is fun!

Combined with colouring.

She loves her school prayer.

Which we recite every morning during the school announcements.

More printing fun.

Nice effort there!

A spelling whiz kid!

Nicely done.

Some more word family fun.

Creative work in my books.

Ditto for this young lass.

Creativity abounds.

He's proud of his country's national anthem.

His efforts prove it.

Ditto for this lad.

A proud Canadian, for sure!

Tomorrow is "Meet the Creature" night...ooops....I meant "Meet the Teacher" night also called "Program Night" where you will be able to visit your child's classroom and check out all of the learning that has been going on.  We will meet in the school gymnasium at 6:45 for a presentation from our new principal and vice-principal and then we'll all head around to the various classrooms.
Looking forward to seeing many of you tomorrow evening!

Day 11 - Tuesday, Sept. 18

We have our Creation Board filled with work from the students.

Our Literartcy...yes...literARTcy board is filled with our personal inventories developed from a special conference with Mr. Hamer.

Tuesday afternoons we cross the hallway and head into Mrs. Akkawi's class for singing.

Mr. Hamer and Mr. Guitar (as the guitar is affectionately known as) sure have fun.

So do the children.  It's great learning new songs to sing.

It was "Meet the Creature" night at school...oops...I goofed again...that's "Meet the Teacher" night.  Here we see Mme Pepe informing the parents about the French program.

It was really nice seeing and meeting all of the parents who came out.

This is a very special picture to me.  Yes, these two moms were once students in my class when they attended elementary school here at St. Bernard!  I am so proud of them both.  What a thrill it was for me to see you again!  I taught one of these beautiful ladies in Grade Two and the other in Grade Five.  Hey, I think they make me look younger!

Here is a lovely card sent to all the families in preparation for the sacraments.

While I did use the SmartBoard to showcase our classroom blog, it was fun to put up my crib notes on the good old-fashioned blackboard.
I will catch up Wednesday's work later.
Have a relaxing evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 12 - Wednesday, Sept. 19

Buster Bear loves working with the students during math class.

On Wednesday, we created a tally chart in order to assemble information about our students' favourite colour of the rainbow.

With the tally chart complete, we totalled the tallies for each colour.
Then we added the totals as a verification to ensure all 19 pupils were represented.

The children then came up to the board and placed their face magnet above their favourite colour.

The graph is building nicely.

Aha!  We now have a pictograph which closely resembles a bar graph.

Aren't they a good looking bunch of students?

Here are some images of the class at work.

I walked about the room as they were all on task.

A few aerial shots.

They certainly do work diligently.

Lots of hands go up when I ask a question.

Later in the math lesson, I wanted the children to work in groups, so I cut out their names and placed them in an old Double Bubble pail.

Each two names which were drawn from the bucket became the groups for the lesson.

Happy they are!

Total focus.

Until Mr. Hamer says, "Smile!"

Some friendly helpers like math as well.

Too much fun!

Nice quality work.

Say "Cheese!"

Busy counting at first.

In order to subtract.

The children learned that when we subtract we begin with the larger number.

They catch on quickly.

For "12 - 5", the girls first assemble twelve cubes.

Then they remove the five.

Eventually ending up with seven cubes.

By using manipulatives, we are scaffolding their learning.

The cubes are a great aid for the pupils.

Soon, we will graduate from the cubes to a ruler.

Then, it is our goal to be able to determine the answers to basic addition and subtraction algorithms in their head.

Because the recess bell rang and we were still occupied with the cubes on our desk, we decided to have a "picnic snack" on the classroom floor.

The floor is very clean...so no worries about hygiene.

The girls and boys loved the picnic!

So did the stuffies.

Friendship.

Camaraderie.

Healthy treats abound.

Buster Bear is tired from completing his math paper.  He's reminded Mr. Hamer to re-read his posting before sending it to the parents as he found a "typo" last night and Mr. Hamer had to go back and correct it.  Buster Bear is meticulous in his work.

Buster Bear wants to remind the moms and dads to label articles of clothing such as boots and jackets.  Today we had two boys with the exact same style of boot and they became confused for a short while when they were getting dressed to go outside for recess time.  Luckily, the two boys had different boot sizes and the situation was solved pretty quickly.

Buster Bear wishes a fantastic evening to all of our class families!

Day 13 - Thursday, Sept. 20

Time to make a second graph in math class this week.

This time we brainstormed our students' favourite seasons.

Those magnetic faces sure help to make a quick graph.

While still scaffolding the learning for the children, Mr. Hamer took the information and created a master bar graph for the pupils to colour.  (This graph represents yesterday's posting where we selected our favourite colours of the rainbow, not from our favourite season shown in the picture above.  Those graphs will be shared next week.)

Mr. Hamer modelled three versions with different colouring techniques.

The boys and girls sure had fun creating their own versions.

Too much fun.

Lots of pride shown in their work.

Later, next week, we will have the students draw the bars on their own for yet another graph.

The students like having their work shared through the blog.

"Can I get my graph photographed?" they all ask.

Of course they can!

We watched a small cartoon on Creation on the SmartBoard.

The children anticipated what each day would bring as they now know the story very well.

God created the sky and seas...the land too.

The sun for light and life.

The moon and stars.

Creatures of the sea and sky.

Creatures of the land.

Human beings too.
Showing a short two and half minute cartoon like this is a nice way to settle once the children come in off the playground after the long lunch recess.
I will post Friday's activities sometime later throughout the weekend.
Have a lovely two day break from school everyone!
Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 14 - Friday, Sept. 21

Friday morning found rs. Eaton, Father Pereira, Mrs. Blackmore and Mr. Hamer (behind the camera) in church early to review the mass before school started.

We enjoyed a lovely service with Father.  We are so proud of our choir for their wonderful voices.  They certainly made our first mass of the year an uplifting one.  That's our lovely principal, Mrs. MacDonald, kneeling in the aisle to the left.

Back in class we looked up at the SmartBoard to learn some more about our amazing country.

Students were given the opportunity to come up and interact with the SmartBoard where they could learn a bit more about some of the provinces.

Our focus today was the maritime provinces.  This little one will tap the purple camera button to see an image from New Brunswick.

Where we see a small tidal pool.
Mr. Hamer mentioned that the largest tides in the world appear in the Bay of Fundy.

With each province, you can play a fun game.

Here, our friend is completing a simply jigsaw puzzle.

Ah yes!  A chickadee!

On to Prince Edward Island.

Lots of items in this picture to interact with.

The good old lighthouse helped to protect mariners during harsh storms.

We find yet another lighthouse on the Nova Scotia page.

You click on it and day turns to night.  Note the small maple leaf on the Bluenose.  When you tap on the maple leaf, you are taken to a game.

Before we play the game, we tap on the camera icon to see a lovely image of a lighthouse in Nova Scotia.  Could it be Peggy's Cove?

Yes, the Bluenose game.

This handsome lad is tapping on the green arrow multiple times to make his Bluenose go faster.

He wins the race!

Others pay rapt attention.

A puffin in this image must mean we are in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Lots of activities to select.

The camera offers us a great picture of a fjord in Gross Morne National Park.

Let's play the Puffin Game.

The puffin reaches the nest.

Just a reminder that the Scholastic Book Orders are due this coming Wednesday, September 26th.

In Block Four, we headed over to the learning commons to meet our Grade Six buddy class.
They are the students in Mr. Papineau's class.  If we visit Mr. Papineau in the morning, then our buddy class will be a Grade 4 class.

Jumping into a book.

Literally!  Hehehe!

Smile for the camera!

Grade Two's can read.

Or Grade Six friends.

Good listening.

This is fun!

Following along.

Two buddies for one student!

Comfy chairs.

Great stories.

We're enjoying ourselves.

Buddy reading is great for both students.

We build confidence.

We build family.

It's fun being like a teacher!

Friendliness.

Devotion.

An overall look.

Lots going on.

Loads of books.

There's Mr. Papineau!

In the pit.

Comfy furniture.

There's Mr. Hamer!

We say farewell to one of our students who moves into a new home and changes school on Monday.  We will miss you greatly and you will always be a part of our class!

I hope everyone got through the terrible weather Ottawa encountered this weekend and that all of our families have their power restored quickly.

All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT
